Met Ashton Goggans this spring, he is an author at Surfer magazine. I had this talk about 8 foot barrels in the south coast of Portugal before with a brazillian editor and he laughed at my face, that was 20 years ago. Last winter Tonel had perfect 12 foot days with waves so hollow even the pros didn´t go out, undergunned… Unfortunatly Tonel and Zavial weren´t good while Ashton was here, but we scored the point at Arrifana and it was quite fun.
Poor man mistimed the set and couldn´t make it out the first atempt. We had to pick him up down the beach, but was on it for one more try and with a little help from his new friends finnaly made it out.
I pitched him my book project Oestreminis between bars at 4am in the infamous party city of Lagos… The drinks and the fun we had was a sucess of it´s own. He must have got that southwestern tip of europe vibe, plus some crazy stories about Hannibal the carthaginean and his drunk elephants.
A couple of months I published a couple of photos in Italy and now Germany. Incridible how people still buy magazines! I used to steal them when I was 15, that´s how I learned english. Now they steal from me, most of the times, lol.
Finally my new housing from Wave Solutions Water Housings is ready. Thanks Nunito for the great job. It will used with a Nikon d810 and a 24mm or 85mm lens. Can´t wait to test it.
I only ordered the shutter buton and the aperture wheel for it, but if I need I can ad butons on the back plate. That´s one of the advantages of buying this in Portugal, the other one is in case of repair, it´s much easier to send it to Ericeira than Australia, etc.
Don´t know about the color in case of loosing it in the surf, maybe a gopro on it with those red inflatables will help.
Way out north there was this fella I wanna tell ya about. Goes by the name of Eurico Romaguera. At least that was the handle his loving parents gave him, but he never had much use for it himself. See, this Romaguera, he called himself “Kiko”. Got a chance to shoot him logging around Sagres a couple of weeks ago, a cool cat.
The intro text was copied from Big Lebowski movie, one of my times favourite, but check this dudes style, totally legit!
We were tracking this mistery swell that never turned up… Super bad call, it had been pumping a couple of days ago. By the way he lost his wallet, checked the water temperature somking a cigarette and he was very selective with hot girls.
“A wiser fella once said, sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes, well, the bar eats you.”
This is legendary Ivo Cação near my home town! I have been trying to get him back down here for ages. This time Zavial was the excuse, but it was almost flat. We scored Tonel today tough! Warm water and all, check it out!
The wonder kid was ripping in trunks, getting some nice barrels and airs. Marlon and Gony were on it too, they think Ivo is Bruno Aleixo, he is a funny cat that´s for sure and a hell of a surfer too!
Bruno is from Coimbra, near Figueira da Foz (Ivo´s birth place and mine). Same accent…
The tide was wrong and the wind sideshore, the banks weren´t perfect, but great waves runned across this point of Buarcos beautiful bay. It was the first day of Liga Meo Surf at Figueira da Foz and the boys were on it warming up for the event.
Check out this little slideshow of the action:
já se comia
I was born here and lived in this cool street full of old taverns. Lunch time was at Tyrone, where I and Marlon had sardines for days (7 euros with wine and all).
Went up to my city of birth Figueira da Foz to watch the Liga Meo Pro Surf event. The waves were good on the first days. Catched up with my friends Eurico Gonçalves and Miguel Figueira from the SOS Cabedelo organization. This poilicians are trying to build a wall in front of Cabedelo´s wave, that´s why we are saying: NÃO, NÃO, NÃO!
Later in the day we had the privilege to party to the Djs João Maria and José Ferreira. Good vibes as always in this magical place. Had a blast with my new camera too, check out the pics!
